WHILE there’s plenty of work ahead for Beautiful Minds Bankstown volunteers, president of the group Kathryn Bain said there’s light at the end of the tunnel in their efforts to upgrade Banks House. The group is on a fundraising drive to upgrade and equip the mental health unit of Bankstown Hospital, which has been mostly untouched since it was built in 1978. Beautiful Minds supports, advocates and raises awareness for mental health recovery. Through their efforts they have been able to upgrade the recreation room and now have their sights set on refurbishing an outdoor courtyard, providing patients, their family and friends with a relaxing space to gather. The upgrade will include decking and seating, artificial turf, garden beds and exercise equipment area. “There’s still a long way to go and more funds to raise but in the meantime the dream of an improved courtyard at Banks House can be achieved,” Mrs Bain said. The NSW Government pitched in last week with $50,000 towards the renovations. The State MP for East Hills, Glenn Brookes and Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, Scott Farlow MLC visited Banks House on Thursday to make the announcement. “Banks House is a vital service for people with an acute mental illness in our community and this funding is going to help them on their road to recovery,” Mr Brookes said. Mrs Bain said local clubs will also donated a further $20,000 towards the renovations. “Our committee look forward to showing everyone the results of there generosity,” she said. Another fundraiser will be held at Revesby Workers’ Club on Saturday, September 8, from 6pm with a charity games night. For further information, call Mrs Bain on 0424 842 006.
